Emily Samuels is a junior at Gaithersburg High School and is always eager to volunteer for local service opportunities. During 9th grade, Emily joined the Student Union. She immediately began to sign-up for every volunteer opportunity offered through the Union. She has volunteered at events such as the Thanksgiving and Christmas Holiday Giving Programs, Homeless Resource Fair, Asbury Book Fair, Seneca Creek environmental clean-ups, special events like Winter Lights and Celebrate Gaithersburg, the Lord’s Table Soup Kitchen at St. Martin’s Church, and Cheers for Volunteers. In addition to her involvement with the Student Union, Emily is also a member of Gaithersburg High School’s Student Service Learning (SSL) Club. The SSL Club activities focus primarily on environmental preservation and raising awareness about protecting the local ecosystem. She also commits her time to other programs such as Key Club, International Club, Montgomery County’s Extended Learning Opportunities Summer Adventure in Learning program at Gaithersburg Elementary School, the Board of Elections 2012, Rockin’ the Rage bullying prevention initiative, Girl Scouts of America, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, and Linkages to Learning. Now just half way through her 11th grade year, Emily has earned more than 600 Student Service Learning hours. Emily always gives her all. She emanates kindness, compassion, and embodies what service is about.
