Project Goal/Description

The goal of the project is to collect all types of tools (new and used) for Habitat for Humanity ReStore. "Volunteers will work one-on-one with the local community to collect new and used tools in an effort to raise funds and awareness of Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County, MD. The donated tools will be sold at Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County ReStore and profits from sales will help build affordable housing locally."

Timeline for Planning

  • 4 weeks before: print flyers and spread word of the Tool Drive
  • 1 week before: organize a collection center for tools (i.e.-bins)

How Many Volunteers

5-10 volunteers to collect incoming donations and sort tools, 1-2 hours per volunteer

How Was This Publicized to Recruit Volunteers?

Post flyers at Montgomery County Volunteer Center, Habitat for Humanity ReStore and local community boards. E-mail out “Tool Drive” flyer on ListServs (Constant Contact). Volunteers, interns, and employees spread word of the event verbally.

Required Facilities, Materials & Expenses

Project supplies: paper (for flyers), donation forms, scotch tape, bins, price tags. Most, if not all, items are already available for use through Habitat for Humanity ReStore.


Publicity—raising awareness of the event. Also, getting functioning and usable tools.

"Habitat ReStore is nonprofit retail outlet specializing in the resale of new and gently used furniture, appliances and building materials to the general public. All materials are donated by local retail businesses, building contractors, suppliers and individuals, and are made available for sale to the public at deep discounts. All donations are tax deductible, and proceeds go back to our local Habitat for Humanity Affiliate to build houses for low‐income families in our community."
