Project Goal/DescriptionThe goal of this project is to distribute gently-used clothing to families in need. For the third consecutive year, Hanna Andersson stores in Tysons Corner, Virginia and Bethesda, Maryland held what has become an annual event – the Hanna-Me-Downs Clothing Drive. Each year Hanna Andersson partners with United Way of the National Capital Area to help distribute clothes to families in need through United Way’s network of member non-profits. United Way focuses on the needs of our local community and distributes over 1000 articles of clothing. Among the charities participating are Family Services in Gaithersburg, Campagna Center, Shelter House, and Seven Corners Children Center in Virginia. The Hanna-Me-Downs program is run in the spring where families can donate gently used Hanna clothing for the benefit of area families and children.
Timeline for Planning
The retail stores typically advertise this program/opportunity for a month prior to the actual clothing drive, offering their customers a 25% discount off a new purchase if they donate their old “Hanna Clothing.” This promotion then lasts for two weeks.
How Many VolunteersHundreds of volunteers make this project successful by donating clothing; the sales associates of Hanna Andersson then volunteer their time at United Way to sort and arrange the clothing by gender and size to get ready for the big clothing drive. They are also present the day of the clothing drive to assist nonprofits with selecting clothing for their clients and to answer any questions. With so many participants, it doesn’t take any one person much time to make this project a success. Customers are encouraged to go through their closets and pull out clothing that they have outgrown or don’t use. They then need to deliver them to the Hanna Andersson Retail stores. The sales associates typically volunteer a total of 8 hours in one day for the event.
How Was This Publicized to Recruit Volunteers?Hanna Andersson sends emails to their customers along with posting publicity materials in the store a month prior to the drive kicking off.
